Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) has been carrying out statistical activities by aligning itself solidly to the most updated methodological studies and standards in the international arena particularly those implemented by such international organizations as the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU). By adapting quickly to cutting-edge technological changes and breakthroughs, Turk stat has strengthened its information infrastructure and increased significantly its institutional capacity. Accordingly, TurkStat has been responding to rapidly changing statistical information needs and demands of today's world in a more comprehensive and timely manner.
Significant steps taken by TurkStat in terms of compliance with international norms and standards have been recognized by such leading international actors as Statistical Office of the EU (Eurostat), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB). With this respect, proposals to cooperate with TurkStat in providing technical assistance towards third countries have come from these organizations. Consequently, TurkStat has actively engaged in bilateral and multilateral international cooperation activities at international level to meet these ever increasing demands.
TurkStat aims at maintaining its cooperation activities with these international actors by increasing the scope and the content of the studies. As part of this orientation, TurkStat has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 18 August 2020 with World Bank. By virtue of the document aiming at collaborating in carrying out activities conducive to help developing countries improve their statistical system, a new dimension has been added to the cooperation framework of two Institutions.
World Bank provides financial and technical assistance towards the demanding countries by establishing close partnerships with a view to improve life quality and support sustainable economic development. In the field of statistics, WB has also implementing comprehensive programmes to support the statistical systems of developing countries together with partner countries and institutions. Accordingly, upon the request of WB on providing technical assistance programs to third countries in the field of statistics together with TurkStat, the MoU laying down the framework of the cooperation was signed between the sides.
The aim of the MoU is to ensure that TurkStat's wide knowledge and well-established experience in compliance with international norms and standards in the field of statistics is to be shared with third countries in order to support and strengthen their statistical systems by conducting joint studies with the WB. Within this context, various kinds of activities such as meetings, seminars, conferences and training programs could be organized together with the WB for the demanding countries’ National Statistical Institutes.
The MoU would also enable TurkStat Experts to participate in certain types of international programmes of the WB.
Respectfully announced to the public.
