R&D statistics are indispensible tools for decision-makers dealing with economic growth and productivity, science, industry and social policies and they are also a part of the economic statistics. Knowledge-based economies have shown increasingly more interest in R&D and innovation systems.

Therefore, enhancing R&D statistics and collecting more detailed data, various scientific management suggestions and strengthening policies have become one of the leading objectives. R&D operations are intended to identify sectors, industries, scientific fields and other classified categories of these activities and also labour force, financial sources, expenditures to be used in national and international reports. R&D statistics are part of the statistical system in OECD countries and these statistics are compiled in our country according to Frascati Manual.
